Dry needling involves the insertion of very fine needles into the painful tight muscle(sometimes described as a knot in the muscle). These are referred to as myofascial trigger points. It is thought that these points have a high concentration of chemicals within them that causes the muscle to tighten. Dry needling may help with increasing blood flow and help block the pain signals to and from the brain.
The aim of dry needling is to relax these trigger points and reduce pain. It encourages muscle relaxation, better blood supply to the area and restores normal function to the painful muscle.
Feelfit’s Approach
It is usually a painless technique and lasts about 10-20minutes. The needles are individually packaged, sterile and single- use. It is often used in conjunction with other physiotherapy treatment modalities. Our staff are all highly trained in dry needling.
Dry needling is similar to acupuncture, however the dry needles are placed in anatomical points rather than traditional acupuncture meridian points.
